Several hundred Chinese citizens have returned home following outbreaks of rioting in Vietnam over the past week. The protests were sparked after a Chinese oil rig, protected by a flotilla of ships, started operating in an area of sea claimed by Vietnam. Two people died in the trouble which affected dozens of factories.
Serbia and Bosnia are struggling to cope with the damage from the worst floods in more than a century. At least 37 people have been killed by landslides and high waters after a week of torrential rain. Emergency services are currently trying to prevent one of the country’s main power stations from flooding.
There is confusion about the political situation in Libya where a militia leader has called on the parliament to hand over power to a body drawing up a new national constitution. The call came hours after an attack on the national assembly in which two people were killed and a number of politicians were abducted.
