President Obama has warned that failing to raise the U.S. debt ceiling would be catastrophic and risks a new recession. But Democrats and Republicans are no closer to agreement on the issue, nor over the federal government shutdown. The US is said to reach its debt limit on October 17th.
The Nobel prize for physics has been awarded to the Belgian and British scientists Francois Englert and Peter Higgs for discovering the Higgs Boson. In the 60’s they helped to propose the existence of this basic building block of the universe; also known as the God particle.
Protesters in Brazil have disrupted an official visit to a football stadium being built for next year’s World Cup. The group of teachers vandalized part of the site and chanted slogans against FIFA during the inspection. They are critical of the huge financial cost of preparations for the tournament.
