The siege at a mall in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, is into a third day. The security forces say they have secured most of the complex. A spokesman has told the BBC. Most of the hostages have now been rescued but there are about ten people still being held. At least 68 people have been killed.
Germany’s electoral authorities have confirmed that chancellor Angela Merkel has secured a third term in office. With her party, the CDU winning 41½ percent of the vote in February elections; it is the party’s strongest showing since 1990 but still, Mrs. Merkel doesn’t quite have an absolute majority.
China’s ministry of civil affairs says 25 people have died as a result of Typhoon Usagi. The storm has affected 3½ million people on the mainland and the port of Hong Kong has been shut down.
