Nigella Lawson today looked confident as she walked past a frenzied media scrum. She was at court to face tough questions about the breakdown of her marriage to Charles Saatchi and claims that she was a habitual drug user. She told the court, “I have never been a drug addict. I’ve never been a habitual user…there are two times in my life I have used cocaine.”
She also talked about smoking cannabis during her marriage to Mr. Saatchi. “I would say it with some shame; I have smoked the odd joint, in the last year of my marriage. It made an intolerable situation tolerable.”
Nigella Lawson and her ex-husband Charles Saatchi, a multi-millionaire art collector, were often photographed out in public. Then in the summer, these paparazzi photographs were published in which Mr. Saatchi has his hand around Ms. Lawson’s neck. The couple divorced shortly afterwards.
In court, Mrs. Larson alleged Mr. Saatchi had threatened her by saying, “If you don’t come back to me and clear my name I will destroy you.” By, she said, “…spreading false allegations of drug use.” She finished by saying “I felt subjected to intimate terrorism by Mr. Saatchi.”
Nigella Lawson is one of Britain’s most celebrated television cooks. Today she is giving evidence in the trial of two of the couple’s former personal assistants. Elizabetta and Francesca Grillo are accused of dishonestly spending over half a million pounds on a company credit card.
Reporter: It was here, in Belgravia at the family home that Nigella Lawson and Charles Saatchi formed a close relationship with the Grillo sisters. The women were in charge of household duties, including organizing the laundry and looking after the children. It’s also here that they claim they came to a tacit understanding with Nigella Lawson that they could spend thousands of pounds on the company credit card if they did not reveal her alleged use of Class A and Class B drugs to Mr. Saatchi.
The jury heard that Ms. Lawson gave the Grillos thousands of pounds worth of gifts and now felt let down by Elizabeta, known as Lisa. “I loved Lisa. My children loved Lisa… She came to me at a very difficult time and she was a rock. I would have done anything for her.”
Nigella Lawson earlier told the court that she felt it was her who was now on trial by the world’s media. Her former PAs deny the charges.
